Examining the Impact of Non-Monetary Factors on Voluntary Employee Turnover in the Construction Industry
Abstract
The construction sector is essential to any country's economic development. However, its workforce faces numerous challenges, leading to adverse outcomes, particularly elevated employee turnover rates. This study aimed to identify primary non-monetary factors (NMFs) influencing voluntary employee turnover and to provide actionable recommendations for mitigating this issue. A comprehensive list of NMFs was compiled from existing literature, highlighting factors believed to influence voluntary turnover in the construction sector. 110 people responded to a survey questionnaire that was distributed among Ugandan construction workers. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods to assess the significance of each factor. The findings identified ten key NMFs impacting voluntary turnover. Among these, training and career development, work-life balance, work overload and stress, involvement in decision-making, job security, and leadership style emerged as the most influential drivers. These insights underline the importance of tailored and innovative approaches for addressing turnover intentions in the construction sector. This study offers a deeper understanding of the non-monetary drivers of voluntary employee turnover in Uganda’s construction sector. It emphasizes the need for construction companies to address these critical factors to foster employee retention. Future research can build on this work by exploring additional overlooked factors and examining their effects on turnover
